Artist's statement

Education

After graduating from The Glasgow School of Art in 2015 with a First Class Honours in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design, Karen then completed the postgraduate residential course at Bishopsland, specialising in silverware. 

Karen now works from her studio based in Glasgow.

Process & Inspiration

Karen designs and makes bespoke work employing a considered selection of techniques, 3D printed and handmade components. Her work is inspired by the equipment we build to explore outer space and how the invisible is revealed through these tools. The relationship we have with the universe, questions of time and our existence are also underlying subjects of her work.

Ethically Produced

Karen strives to offer contemporary, quality designs with high ethical standards to her clients, and continually looks for ways of improving.

Awards

Karen received awards for her work even before graduating and continues to be a rising star in the silver industry. Awards include: 'Outstanding Scottish Student of the Year' Award from the Incorporation of Goldsmiths' of the City of Edinburgh in 2014, 'New Designers Silversmithing Award' from The Goldsmiths' Company London in 2015 and 'Young Silversmith of the Year in 2016 from the Pearson Silver collection.

Karen Westland has showcased her work at many events including Collect at the Saatchi Gallery London, Silverspeaks: Form with the Contemporary British Silversmiths, and in multiple exhibitions at The Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow.

Her work can be found in public and private collections in the UK.
