Artist's Statement
As an Orcadian, now living in Perthshire, on the banks of the River Tay - my roots and influences derive from time growing up in Orkney, providing a wealth of inspiration - walking along the shores and cliffs, providing a constant subject matter for my prints.
My theme is not always representational – I mean to suggest a time of day or a memory, creating the sense of a place and how I see or remember it – working mainly from sketches which are then worked on in the studio and further developed into limited edition prints at the DCA Printstudio.
Over the past year I have been concentrating on monoprinting either on it’s own, as a one-off unique piece of artwork or, combining monoprint with woodcut and etching.
By printing layers of transparent colours which are applied in a painterly manner using brush, roller and other textural materials, I work directly on the etching press, applying inks on a clear perspex sheet with my drawing showing underneath as guidelines, I am thus able to create one-off or variable edition prints.
