Artists Statement
Beth’s pieces explore ideas of the embedded object and memory. A keen observer, her bench has been likened to a laboratory where she works instinctively with her materials rather than contriving designs beforehand. Drawing and photography also play an important part of her research process allowing Beth to record both her developments at the bench and exterior influences drawn from different landscapes.
The remote environment she comes from has strongly influenced the work she produces. The way in which the natural elements form and sculpt the vast open spaces in the far north of fascinates her and she aims for this to be reflected in her work. Surrounded by collected objects that inspire experimentation with metals and other materials; these sources interest Beth because they have often been touched by different eroding processes which give them resonance and for her a sense of preciousness.
‘The found objects I use are metaphors for recovered memory. I see these materials as artefacts which have a powerful relationship with the environment I have taken them from. Away from the wearer I would like my pieces to take on the character of still lives through the contrasts I seek to evoke in my assemblages. I find the manner of designing through making both intellectually and emotionally productive – I thoroughly enjoy the labour of hand tool processes.’
Beth would like her work to be seen as a moving dialogue which reflects the often bleak and fragile nature of the environment she comes from.
Based in Edinburgh, Beth has exhibited in Japan, USA and the Netherlands and outlets include The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh.
She was awarded the Harley Award for the best use of materials & The Helen A. Rose Bequest Award both in 2003.
