About Karolina Baines
“Making jewellery is a way for me to make sense of the ever growing tapestry of life and the way in which the threads of the past intertwine with the present and reach out into the future.”
Karolina recently graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a first class honours degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing, and received recognition by the Goldsmiths Company with their ‘Talent Spotted’ award at New Designers 2015.
Viewing jewellery as sculptures that move with the wearer, Karolina seeks to create engaging visual and tactile experiences that instil deep personal connections. This approach is evident in her collection ‘Currents of Venice’ where she seeks to evoke the wonders of the ancient city, intertwined with seemingly unconnected influences, including the weaving movements of basketry and the pleat-work of Issey Miyake to suggest a sense of movement and rhythm.
As a jewellery maker, her work is strongly rooted in the sketchbook process, especially in the use of collaging and printmaking, with a strong emphasis on line work and markmaking. Her work is characterised by delicate lines, creating patterns that fascinate and invite interaction, shot through with deep and vibrant enamelled colours.
