Artist's Statement
PRECIOUS DESTRUCTION Accomplished jeweller, Kelvin J. Birk has developed an intriguing collection of work where valuable gemstones are ruthlessly crushed and then reconstructed to create dynamic jewellery and objects. Following personal life experiences Kelvin comments “There is always destruction and loss but out of that come new things and a new order.”Consciously disregarding what is traditionally considered precious, Birk revels in a lack of control, allows chaos to take over and the nature of the precious materials to dictate the final outcome of the pieces. In some of his rings this is beautifully demonstrated: precious metals cast it selves in unique forms, enclosing crushed or whole precious stones. This collection is constantly developing and through theses processes new pieces emerge all the time. This ensures that each resulting piece is original, and no two are identical - and this holds true across all his work..
