About Laila Smith
Laila started her jewellery career in 1996, after graduating from MMU, in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham on a Jewellery Fellowship and has run her own studio ever since. This has been moved from Birmingham to Brighton to London and she has been in her current studio in Brighton & Hove for 21 years
Over the years she has been influenced and inspired by architecture, grids, scientific symbols and currently mathematics. Her work has a minimal aesthetic utilising repeated forms and her love of soldering can be seen in the collections. She works with traditional jewellery making techniques and a few years ago started to use scoring which is a silversmithinmg technique mostly used for traditional box making.
Her jewellery collections consist of rings, necklaces, earrings and bangles and she particulary loves creating stacking rings and has begun incorporating more gemstones into her work. She works in silver and 18ct gold on her collections and undertakes commissions in a variety of metals.
