Artist's statement
Having grown up in the North East of Scotland, Lois draws inspiration from the scenic coasts and quaint harbours for which the area is famous. Her aim is to create fun jewellery that is a colourful celebration of her home and heritage.
Lois’ main interest lies within the contemporary enamel field. She uses a combination of wet process and powder enamels on steel. She combines these with graphite drawings, precious metal attachments and welded components to create illustrative and evocative wearable pieces of art.
Colour has always been a key part of Lois’ practice. She carefully selects colour and texture combinations for her works. She uses these to evoke memories, in viewers and wearers, of days spent by the coast. Usually in her pieces, one side of the steel is a vibrant block colour with graphite illustrations while the other reflects textures and colours of the sea, sand and sky. Over time the edges of the steel will begin to rust, echoing the patina that naturally occurs when objects are exposed to a marine environment.
