Lourdes Rodriguez
Lourdes Rodriguez was born in the Canary Islands, Spain in 1960. Her first career was in banking, in the City of London, where she spent the first twelve years of a successful working life.
An urge for being creative in the visual arts and a need for a personal challenge made her leave her banking career and become a student of jewellery design and making.
She graduated from London Guildhall University with a First Class Honours Degree in silversmithing, jewellery and applied crafts in 1996, after a training period of six years and is now pursuing her second career as a jewellery maker as well as enjoying and coping with being a mother.
Through her pieces, she wishes to express delicacy, fragility, elegance and energy.
Inspiration has come from looking at the movement of insects, a theme through which she has aquired a visual understanding of the aesthetic qualities that are important to her
Linear 3-D, surface texture and colour, in the form of enamelling, are important aspects of her work. Acting on impulse and expressing energy are crucial elements of her design practice, especially when drawing.
She then tries to transfer these elements on to the metal, applying each technique personally by hand and making each piece an individual carrier of her emotions at the time.
