Artist's Statement
Cat Dunn’s work shows primarily her love of the Victorian Era, architecture, construction as well as engaging subjects as diverse as the civils rights movement, slavery, racism and feminism. The artist investigates those aspects that are often hidden or misrepresented. In her varied and diverse approaches to making jewellery; installations; and curatorial projects, the context of the work must always have an impact on the viewer.
Cat graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2019 after completing her BA HONS in Silversmithing & Jewellery Design. She continues her studies - Masters - Curatorial Practice in September 2019 at the same institution.
Cat current collection is entitled: Antiquated Modernity: Crochet in the 21st Century.
The artist’s current body of work has been developed in response to a series of questions about the commercial and artistic aspect of a craft skill.
The artist also wanted to push the boundaries of certain materials i.e. wire.
By only using modern materials such as steel, copper, fine silver and paper, and utilizing a mix of industrial and fine art, this body of work is hoping to challenge these stereotypes by transcending this skill into being seen as a commercial art form.
The most challenging part was hand drawing wire down to the desired dimension without losing the tension or breakage, coupled with turning her bathtub into a science lab to create paper.thread.
