CLAIRE LOWE

Three pieces in tea and resin

Artist’s statement

.

My work combines a selection of materials predominantly plastics, including acrylic shet and epoxy and polyester resins. I enjoy mixing materials to create new and exciting combinations, for example my use of tea leaves within resin. This progressed from studying the traditions of loose tea and the introduction of the tea bag.

Other pieces hold soft wools or knitted strips inside resin; you can get the idea of the soft surface but it is preserved within the hard resin walls.

I enjoy the possibilities plastics give me, with the use of colour and transparency to embed mixed media materials. I make silicon moulds to cast most of my pieces, and work with silver is produced using the cold enamel process.

My new collection is inspired by textiles techniques and is a contination of work to combine materials and merge textiles and silversmithing. Layered acrylic ovals creating organic forms which are then hand stitched with different coloured threads. The use of oxidised chain brings out the contrast of the opal white acrylic and the black stitching.
