About the artist
Emily Jo Gibbs has a wonderful talent for combining materials and creates beautiful objects that have been inspired by her observations of nature. Her new work explores and develops the theme of nests. Soft wool bowls embroidered with bird song sit beside willow baskets woven on silver frames and tiny silk containers that are suspended between stems of silver reeds and wild oats."I find beauty in tiny little pieces of moss, grass and peeling bark. I try to describe something that is extremely beautiful, very fragile and short-lived, using a palette of colour and texture. I am fascinated by the contrasts between materials, the texture and the shimmer of the beaten metal against the soft matt colours of the silk and wool.”“Creating this new body of work has been extremely liberating and I’ve found fresh enthusiasm for my life long love affair with making. Bringing new techniques to my repertoire has broadened my approach, letting go of the bag form, developing my basket making skills and exploring forms in silver wire has led me in an exciting new direction.”
