Artist Statement
Over the last few years I have been developing past ideas and experimenting with new ones. Having been involved in running a gallery for over 19 years I had no time to be a maker, which meant that I had too many ideas stored up in my head. So I wanted to pare things back and keep it simple… Of course I decided to start with one of the most difficult techniques…enamelling! The last time I had enamelled was for my degree show in 1988. However, this time I wanted to do something different with the enamel. I played around with fusing gold foil on to the enamel, sometimes with the colour showing through, almost like an old relic but with a modern cotemporary twist.
Most of the pieces in this collection are individual (while they could be repeated, no two pieces would ever be the same). It can take some time between the concept and the final piece as I continue to explore these challenging but exciting materials.
