Artist's Statement
In my current body of work, I am questioning and seeking answers to my cultural identity. As I was on exchange, removed from my birthplace of Northern Ireland and my family origins in Hong Kong; I began to understand the relationship one has with their home. As a result, I was inspired by the nostalgic objects and remembrances of home cooking; paying respects to my childhood experiences of family meals and our interactions with the inanimate.
My silversmithing work applies layers of wet process and powdered enamel onto raised contemporary copper and silver vessels, echoing an essence of traditional Asian ceramics. Bamboo has been used within the designs of several pieces; chosen primarily because of its material qualities and historical importance in Chinese design. Inspired by the multiple tools and vessel forms used by my parents, I aim to recreate these memories into evocative physical manifestations.
