Artist's Statement

I am interested in the appeal of incomplete or imperfect objects, such as ruined buildings and dying plants. Natural or decaying forms have beautiful irregularities. I also enjoy the variations inherent in the metalwork processes I use, and exaggerate rather than disguise them. My making and design of an object are closely linked, and develop ideas through intensive material research.

My mixed-metal work explores new ways of creating pattern through process.

Joining seams, molten layers and experimental alloys build up complex internal structures within the metal forms. These are revealed by chemical patination, which creates contrast by reacting with each metal differently to produce a bold range of colours.

Inspired by the beauty of imperfection and by the limitless possibilities of metal as a material, these painterly sculptural vessels reveal more details with each viewing, and are intended for decoration and for thoughtful contemplation.

Some also have a practical function as containers.
