Artist's Statement
Karen is influenced by the Elizabethan era of flamboyant dress with its fine detailing and dramatic scale and ideas from architecture, in particular the beauty of urban landscapes for their structure, geometry and repetition.
Her bespoke statement cuffs and neckpieces combine elements of traditional textile techniques such as double-pleating, folding and smocking with stainless steel mesh-cloth - an engineered techno fabric woven on a loom. These are recurrent themes, and create subtle changes in the surface of the cloth, the often extravagant layers creating an opulent feel and recalling a past time of exaggeration and decoration.
Alongside this collection is Karen's work in silver and 22ct gold vermeil. "Ruffle" is crafted from ribbons of silver, finely textured and hand-forged to form a densely layered, undulating surface. These pieces have elements of complexity and simplicity and due to the nature of the technique, all have subtle differences.
Karen's work reflects the spirit of her research - alluding to the past but innovative and timeless.
