Artist's Statement

Sophie creates tactile and kinetic jewellery objects inspired by industrial, horological and vintage paraphernalia and mechanisms.

'Fidget' was developed by simplifying and re-working components from inside clocks and watches. Disassembling an old mechanism or piece of machinery is like exposing a treasure trove bursting with unusual shapes and elegant forms from which to draw inspiration. The components interact with one another as does the wearer with each piece of jewellery, rolling, spinning, roatating ...

Her most recent work 'Container' has emerged from a fascination with hinges and box making following a two week QEST silversmithing scholarship with Rod Kelly in Shetland. Each piece is a technical accomplishment and completely unique ... a wearable box for hiding a sentimental talisman or trinket ... or something to keep your pills in!

Sophie is very much concerned with the making process itself and interpreting age old, traditional hand techniques in a contemporary way. She relishes the challenge of making pieces that look simple, but are very technical in their construction. Using various silversmithing techniques on a very small scale in combinatiion with the ancient techniques of gold inlay and Kuem-Boo, Sophie engineers minimal forms and keepsakes in precious metal.

From mesmerising spinning pendants and hinged lockets embellished with pure gold to her signature rolling rings, each piece is individually handcrafted by Sophie in her Hackney Wick Studio.
